CIPA ELF and Rotary Club of Conifer Donate Books Aplenty to Area Libraries
By Mike Daniels
In less than a year’s time, over $15,000 worth of new books have been donated to mountain area schools and libraries by the Rotary Club of Conifer partnering with the Colorado Independent Publishers Association’s Education and Literacy Foundation (ELF). The most recent donation took place earlier this month at Jefferson County Public Library’s Evergreen location where more than $3600 of new reference books were presented by Rotary Club of Conifer Literacy Committee members Mike Daniels and Jack Rowland. Since Daniels is a member of the CIPA Board of Directors, he also represented the CIPA ELF. Local Evergreen residents, Sue Marinelli, who represents District 2 on the Jeffco Board of Education and Linda Rockwell, Jefferson County Public Library Trustee, were present to receive the books along side Mariko Wilcox, Head of Information Services at Evergreen Public Library.
As the multiple boxes of books were unpacked and the books displayed on a table, Rockwell and Marinelli were shown a five volume Medical Guide Encyclopedia that had been previously donated to the library during a special presentation to Wilcox at the Rotary Club of Conifer in July. The comprehensive Magill’s Medical Guide published by Salem Press was donated in memory of Evergreen resident and Conifer Rotary member Richard Stevenson who passed away in June. Daniels said “now there’s a complete five volume set of the Medical Guide at both the Evergreen and Conifer libraries as it was included in the last Rotary club/CIPA ELF donation to Conifer High School/Jefferson County Public Library in March.”
After the donation was presented to the library, Mariko Wilcox, said that “having current, accurate and balanced information in print on our shelves is vital to our collection. We’re grateful for the community partnerships we’ve developed with groups like the Rotary Club of Conifer and the CIPA Education and Literacy Foundation which help strengthen the community as a whole. As the economy turns downward the trend is that libraries become busier and therefore it’s even more important to receive support like this from our local and state beneficent organizations.”
Linda Rockwell commented “as a resident of this community I’m very appreciative of these donations to our schools and libraries as they help to defray the increasing costs of books allowing our available funds to go further. Though many believe the internet has reduced demand on libraries, the fact is that library usage continues to increase dramatically.”
Sue Marinelli who is a member of the Jeffco Board of Education for District 2 which includes Conifer and Evergreen said the School District works hard to establish partnerships with all kinds of organizations. We’ve established relationships with libraries, service organizations like Rotary, municipalities and recreation districts to promote different projects. The goal is to have community buy-in to many of the important functions of the schools. We want to focus on projects that benefit students in the broad sense. These donated books will provide current reference materials for student and teacher research.”
Daniels and Rowland were focused on how their Rotary Literacy Committee’s donations help the community and especially benefit our young people. This recent donation brings the total value of donated books to mountain area schools and libraries to over $15,000 since last September when the CIPA ELF first partnered with the Rotary Club of Conifer to present a $5000 plus donation of books to Platte Canyon High School’s library as a “Random Act of Kindness” in honor of the students and staff on the one year anniversary of the tragic hostage crisis at the Bailey school.
Any Colorado school or library can request assistance from the Colorado Independent Publishers Association’s 501 c 3 Education and Literacy Foundation. CIPA ELF is partnering with the Literacy Committees of Rotary Clubs throughout the state to help identify need and provide assistance in delivering new books donated to the CIPA ELF from publishers nationwide. Colorado schools via teachers and administrators, and public libraries can request books and/or funds to be used for reading and writing programs. The requests are reviewed by the CIPA ELF Board and awarded based on need and established criteria. For more information about CIPA and the CIPA ELF or to contact the Board visit www.cipabooks.com.
The Rotary Club of Conifer meets every Tuesday morning from 7:00am-8:00am at the Mountain Resource Center in Conifer.
