Book Donations and Help Wanted

We're delighted that people, and authors and publishers in particular, are interested in donating books. Each type of donation has certain guidelines.

DONATIONS BY INDIVIDUALS:
* Start by contacting your local library to see if it accepts books as donations. Your items may be added to a collection or they might be sold at a book sale.
* In general, text books are not useful unless they are quite current.
* In general, magazines and Readers' Digest books are not useful to libraries. (Some will accept these for book sales.) Alternate locations for these items are senior centers or residences, health care centers, and some sports facilities. Publications with lots of photos may be useful to preschool and primary grades.

DONATIONS BY PUBLISHERS:
* Most libraries do not have facilities to accept many multiple copies of the same title.
* A local library may accept a variety of books as donations. Your items may be added to a collection or they might be sold at a book sale.
* You need to contact an individual at a library to confirm its procedures and insure you can get a letter for tax purposes, if you want this. You might start with "collection development," "public relations," or "Friends group."

DONATIONS VIA BOOK DRIVES: A fair amount of work is required for this type of project.
* Think about the groups you want to benefit before you organize your drive. Make connections and arrangements in advance of the drive.
* You will need
1. A suitable place to collect books
2. A way to transport books to the eventual user.
3. Lots of volunteers to sort books and package them
* Types of books most urgently needed are preschoolers, picture books, and Spanish language children's books.

There are several networks of children's and literacy organizations that may be interested in receiving donations. contact me for more information. Send an e-mail to me listing your name, phone number, and e-mail, along with the type and approximate number of your book donations.

Children's and service organizations often can use volunteers to assist with book drives and literacy projects. I also can put you in touch with them.
