Pick a Side – Marketing Vs. Design, a debate…
Independent publishing is filled with choices, choices that are usually attached to costs. Often, indie publishers feel like we’re making a series of tradeoffs in the process of bringing our book to press. What do we really need?
Join us on Saturday, March 18th, as book designers and marketers face off to convince us where our priorities should lie, and CIPA members get to play Devil’s Advocate on your most pressing concerns. The gauntlet is thrown. Get ready to take sides!

I believe that stories are powerful: the characters that feel just like our best friend, the cliffhangers that make us gasp out loud, and the plot twists that keep us up reading past 2am. These books deserve to find their readers.
And I’m a firm believer that authors deserve to earn an income from their writing. This is the best time in history to turn your passion and craft into a career. It’s the so-called ‘new frontier of publishing’ which means that you can decide when, how and what you publish.
Authors aren’t the only ones who get to define a new path in publishing. A decade ago, my job didn’t even exist. I moved to the UK to study for my masters in publishing, getting a thorough initiation into every aspect of the process in each department. I also contributed to several large publishing houses in London before relocating to NYC. I was working as a digital marketer and publishing consultant for a prestigious Madison Ave literary agency but still found something was missing. I wanted to work more closely with authors and the stories they were creating.
I created The Book Octopus out of a love of stories and desire to work directly with authors. Now, I help indie and hybrid authors produce, publish and promote their books all over the world and earn an income from their work. When I’m not reading books for work, I’m reading them for fun.
As the founder and owner of Bookends Design, I have served as a Publishing Resource since 1984. Having worked as a production manager in publishing, art director in video production, and small business owner, I have experienced the gamut of client and vendor interaction.
Whether you are a publisher, business, school, author, or individual and you require graphic design, art direction, project management, print coordination, publishing consulting, or anything in between, Bookends is available to serve your needs.
