Literary Rights and the Indie Author – Maximizing Your Bottom Line

What Rights You May Be Forgetting About, and How to Use them to Maximize Your Bottom Line

Do you know there is more to your book than a one-time publication? What rights are you forgetting about, and what opportunities are you leaving on the table?

Writing and publishing your book is a lot of hard work—what if you could benefit from that work many times over?

Learn about:

  • The different kinds of literary rights, and what they mean for you and your book.
  • Protecting your literary rights and not giving them away for free.
  • How self-publishing authors can take advantage of different literary rights to maximize their bottom line.

WHY YOU NEED TO ATTEND THIS SATURDAY’S MEETING…

Authors will have a better understanding of what needs to be considered when selling rights to publishers. What rights mean and how best to negotiate them. After years of research, writing and dreaming why give anything away when a publisher is interested in acquiring your hard work?

Publishers will gain greater insight on rights and what’s most important when negotiating with an author. EVERY publisher needs to have a clear understanding on acquisition of rights and if you first independently publish your own work and do well with it there’s always a good chance you may want to sell your rights to a larger publisher down the road. Just ask a number of former CIPA members who have done just that and learned the ropes from CIPA!

Associate Service Providers who have never written or published a book will gain a new appreciation for the true value associated with writing, selling and publishing books. All too often ASPs provide a service to authors and publishers such as editing, designing, marketing, etc. and after their work is done disengage from the client. ASPs can realize additional value by knowing the business and incorporating it in the services they provide. This presentation goes beyond literary rights and includes discussion on Fair Use, Copyright Infringement, Permissions and more and ASPs do their clients a disservice if they don’t understand the importance of being able to see “red flags” when they’re working on a client’s project.
