Literary Agent Pros and Cons on Shopping an Indie Published Book to Traditional Publishers

Attendees will learn how independently publishing your book can be good or bad when shopping a title to traditional publishers from a seasoned literary agent’s perspective. They’ll come to understand the author/agent relationship and the process an agent goes through when deciding what titles they want to take on and much more.

Due to the program’s subject matter being of keen interest to CIPA members and aspiring authors from other groups the March 24th CIPA meeting may be the first sold-out meeting of the 2017/18 CIPA season so register early!

Read about our speakers below…

Sarah Bond

Sandra Bond, Bond Literary Agency
Bond Literary Agency is a very small agency with a select list of clients and quite a broad list of titles. Sandra represents everything from adult mysteries to literary fiction to young adult fiction to business books, history and science. Her most recent nonfiction book to be released, The Age of Agile, sold quickly in Russia, China, Holland and India, where it was rushed to press in order to be featured at a February Agile India conference where the author was the keynote speaker. (And when I say rushed, I mean the India publisher printed their edition of the book within two weeks of buying rights.)

Sandra is currently looking for adult commercial and literary fiction, smart mystery/thriller/crime fiction, and YA fiction in all categories. She does not represent memoir, romance, adult science fiction, adult fantasy, poetry, children’s picture books, or screenplays. She’s also looking for compelling narrative nonfiction and science for a general audience. These authors must have great credentials: real expertise in their subject area and some kind of platform from which they can actively promote their books.

Sandra was the program administrator at the University of Denver’s Publishing Institute for 4 years (2005-2009), and she now guest lectures there annually. She is a Denver native and has a degree in microbiology from the University of Colorado. When she’s not working…she’s currently working on her work/life balance.

Submission guidelines can be found on She does not blog—who has time?!—but she does occasionally tweet @bondingnow.

Kristin Nelson

Kristin Nelson, Nelson Literary Agency, LLC
Kristin established Nelson Literary Agency, LLC, in 2002 and over the last decade and a half of her career, she has represented over forty New York Times bestselling titles and many USA Today bestsellers.  Her goal as an agent is simple: she wants every client of hers to make a living solely from writing and 90% of her clients do just that. Those clients include Jamie Ford, Hugh Howey, Marie Lu, Gail Carriger, Josh Malerman, J.D. Barker, Ally Carter, Stacey Lee, Simone Elkeles, Jasinda Wilder, Jana DeLeon, Courtney Milan.

She is currently looking for literary commercial novels, big crossover novels with one foot squarely in genre, upmarket women’s fiction, lead title or hardcover science fiction and fantasy, and young adult and upper-level middle grade novels in all genres.

When she is not busy selling books, Kristin attempts to play golf & tennis. She also enjoys playing Bridge (where she is the youngest person in her club), and can be found hiking in the mountains with her husband and their dog Chutney.
