September 2018 CIPA PRESIDENT’S LETTER
By: Bob Schram
Let the Outbreath into Fall Begin
“Substitute ‘damn’ every time you’re inclined to write ‘very’,
your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.”
Welcome to our 26th year as the Colorado Independent Publishers Association. I am honored and excited to assume the role of CIPA President for 2018–19. Here’s to yet another banner year!
The 24th annual CIPA EVVY Awards Banquet is already behind us. What a grand celebration of all of the publishing achievements of our community over the past year (see photos of this year’s event here). I trust many of you have taken advantage of the opportunity to showcase your book at the MPIBA Fall Discovery Show. Looking forward, as the days grow shorter and summer transitions into autumn, now is a perfect time to pen those new ideas that have been percolating inside you.
Our Board has been busy putting together new and exciting programs like Boost Your Profile with a Podcast Tour slated for our first meeting, continuing to develop an increasingly effective marketing program, and seeking feedback from our membership on how we as an organization can continue to grow and improve.
We recently sent out a Membership Survey asking for a variety of feedback from all of you. I urge you to complete the survey if you have not done so already (take survey here). Possible changes over the coming year may hinge on your responses.
A reminder about The Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association Fall Discovery Show on October 11-13, 2018. Limited slots remain available and registration ends soon to include your book at the CIPA table. A wonderful chance to showcase your book in front of hundreds of booksellers, publishers, distributors, book lovers, and the book industry at large. CIPA members can participate and gain admission to the show when they register for the CIPA Author Showcase (register here) to have a presence at one of the largest regional book shows in the country.
Collaboration within our community is key to enhancing CIPA’s value to all of its members. Continue letting us know what you are interested in, what suggestions you may have, what ways you can contribute. Areas to become involved include:
- Membership and outreach
- Website and social media
- Audio and video production
- CIPA EVVYs
- CIPA ELF (Education and Literacy Foundation)
You can email me here or speak to me directly or to any of our Board members at one of our monthly meetings.
Hope to see you at our kickoff meeting of the 2018–19 season this Saturday!
